Frequently Asked Questions

How do I create a household?

After signing in, open the menu (top-left) and tap Household. Enter a name for your household and tap Create. You'll be given a unique Household ID that you can share with family members or housemates.

How do I invite someone to my household?

Go to Household in the menu. Tap the invite icon (person with a +) at the top right of your household card. This will open a share sheet with a link. The recipient taps the link on their device and HomeSpend will automatically prompt them to join your household.

What is a recurring transaction?

A recurring transaction is a bill or income source that repeats every month โ€” for example, rent, Netflix, or a salary. When you add a transaction, toggle on Repeat monthly and choose the day of month. HomeSpend will automatically create the transaction each month so your records stay accurate without manual entry.

How does receipt scanning work?

Receipt scanning is a Pro feature. When adding a transaction, tap the camera icon in the top bar. Point your camera at a receipt โ€” HomeSpend reads the total amount and date automatically and pre-fills the form. The image is processed on your device and is only uploaded to your household's secure storage if you choose to attach it.

How does Email Receipt Forwarding work?

Email Receipt Forwarding lets you forward receipts and bank alerts directly to HomeSpend. We automatically read the amount and merchant and add it to your Pending Receipts queue for you to review and confirm.

Getting started:

  1. Go to Settings โ†’ Email Receipt Forwarding.
  2. Copy your unique receipt address (e.g. receipt+yourID@homespendpro.com).
  3. In your email app, set up a forwarding rule to send receipts to that address.

Gmail setup:

  1. Open Gmail โ†’ Settings (โš™) โ†’ See all settings.
  2. Go to the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
  3. Tap Add a forwarding address and paste your receipt address.
  4. Gmail sends a verification email to that address โ€” HomeSpend receives it and confirms automatically. No action needed from you.
  5. Back in Gmail settings, choose Forward a copy of incoming mail and save.
  6. Optional: create a Gmail filter so only receipt emails (e.g. From: amazon.com) are forwarded, not everything.

Outlook setup:

  1. Go to Outlook Settings โ†’ View all Outlook settings โ†’ Mail โ†’ Forwarding.
  2. Turn on Enable forwarding, paste your receipt address, and save.

Apple Mail / iCloud:

Apple Mail doesn't have built-in forwarding rules. Set up forwarding on iCloud.com โ†’ Mail โ†’ Settings โ†’ General โ†’ Forward my email to, and paste your receipt address.

What we can read:

  • Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, Nykaa, AJIO orders
  • Zomato, Swiggy, Uber Eats food receipts
  • Uber, Ola, Rapido ride receipts
  • Bank debit & credit SMS/email alerts (HDFC, ICICI, SBI, Axis, Kotak)
  • Utility and subscription bills

Your receipt address is unique to your account โ€” keep it private. Forwarded emails are never stored as raw email; only the extracted amount and merchant are saved.

My forwarded receipt didn't show up in Pending Receipts. Why?

A few reasons this can happen:

  • Gmail forwarding not confirmed: If you just set up Gmail forwarding, look for a "Confirm Gmail Forwarding" banner in the Email Receipt Forwarding screen and tap it to complete the one-time confirmation.
  • No recognisable amount: We look for a currency amount (โ‚น, $, Rs.) in the email. Emails that only contain images (no text) cannot be parsed.
  • Rate limit: A maximum of 50 receipts per day can be processed per account.
  • Wrong address: Make sure you forwarded to your exact receipt address shown in Settings, not a generic address.

If the problem persists, contact us at support@smartdataiq.com and we'll investigate.

How do I track my debts and credit cards?

Open the Liabilities section from the menu. Tap + Add Debt and choose the debt type (credit card, personal loan, mortgage, etc.). Enter the balance, credit limit (for cards), APR, and minimum payment.

HomeSpend automatically calculates your credit utilization rate, available credit, and overall debt-to-income (DTI) ratio. The screen also surfaces credit score tips based on your current utilization.

For credit cards with a balance transfer promotion, you can add a promotional APR and its expiry date so HomeSpend can alert you before the rate reverts.

How does the Debt Payoff Planner work?

The Debt Payoff Planner (Pro) lets you simulate two proven repayment strategies:

  • Avalanche โ€” pay the highest-interest debt first to minimize total interest paid.
  • Snowball โ€” pay the smallest balance first to build momentum and motivation.

Enter your extra monthly payment budget, choose a strategy, and HomeSpend shows your projected payoff timeline and total interest saved for each approach โ€” so you can pick the plan that fits your goals.

Access it from Liabilities โ†’ Debt Payoff Planner.

How do I import transactions from bank SMS alerts?

HomeSpend can import transactions directly from bank debit/credit SMS notifications โ€” no manual entry needed.

  1. Open your SMS app and find a bank alert (e.g. "INR 1,200 debited from your account").
  2. Tap Share and select HomeSpend from the share sheet.
  3. HomeSpend reads the amount and merchant and adds it to your Pending Receipts queue.
  4. Open the app, review the transaction, and tap Confirm to save it.

Supported banks include HDFC, ICICI, SBI, Axis, Kotak, and most major Indian banks. If your SMS is not parsed correctly, contact us at support@smartdataiq.com.

How do I cancel my subscription?

Subscriptions are managed through the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android), not through HomeSpend directly.

  • iOS: Settings โ†’ Apple ID โ†’ Subscriptions โ†’ HomeSpend Pro โ†’ Cancel
  • Android: Play Store โ†’ Profile โ†’ Payments & subscriptions โ†’ Subscriptions โ†’ HomeSpend Pro โ†’ Cancel

Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period.

I purchased Pro but the app still shows Free. What do I do?

Go to Settings in the app and look for the Restore Purchases option on the paywall screen. Tap it to restore your active subscription. If the issue persists, contact us at support@smartdataiq.com with your order receipt.

How do I delete my account?

Go to Settings (menu โ†’ Settings) and tap Delete My Account at the bottom. You will be asked to confirm. This permanently removes your personal data within 30 days. Note: shared household data (transactions entered into a household) may remain visible to other household members.

Why isn't Google Sign-In working on Android?

Make sure you have a stable internet connection and the latest version of Google Play Services installed. If the issue continues, please contact us at support@smartdataiq.com and include your Android version and device model.

Is my financial data secure?

Yes. All data is transmitted over HTTPS and stored in Google Firebase with strict security rules โ€” only authenticated members of your household can access your household's data. We do not store payment card information. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
